We rent out our Hymer Mercedes Sprinter – Grand Canyon S camper.
We bought this camper last year because we were looking for a reliable, good camper to make long trips with.
About the car
It is an automatic with a good engine (160 hp); the camper easily reaches 130 km/h on the highway. The car is just under 6 meters long, which is ideal for parking, but also cheaper on the ferry, for example 😉. The car is 2.40m wide. The Sprinter sits higher on its wheels, making it easy to drive on less-than-perfect roads. Additionally, it features cruise control and a reversing camera. The car does not have a tow bar.
The interior
It is a camper with 4 seats (and therefore 4 seatbelts) and 4 sleeping berths. The front seats turn around to create a seating area. There is a kitchenette (2 burners) with a good fridge and small freezer. There is a toilet and a shower, and a gas boiler for heating and hot water. There is a Thule awning under which you can sit outside.
The beds
Downstairs, there is a double bed. We are 1.77m and 1.87m tall ourselves and have enough room to sleep downstairs. Additionally, you can fold open the top section, where another two people can sleep; this bed is longer but also slightly narrower. There are mosquito nets and blackout curtains on all windows.
You don't have to worry about your battery failing to start because you used too much electricity; it is a Hymer, so everything is safely arranged.
Available items
The items listed below are available; if you do not have them at home, you can take them for free.
- Safety equipment (warning triangle, reflective vests, etc.)
- Mini rechargeable vacuum cleaner and dustpan
- 2 small saucepans and a frying pan (for gas).
- Plastic glasses, cups, cutting board, bowls and cutlery.
- Gas cylinder
- Small kettle
- Plugs and hoses with multiple types of connections for electricity and water.
- Two folding chairs and a table for outside
- Levelling blocks
In addition, the following items are available to borrow for an extra charge:
- Ecoflow foldable solar panel (400 W)
- Ecoflow battery with a battery capacity of 1,024 Wh
- Ecoflow portable air conditioner (Please note, this allows you to cool down the camper by a few degrees quite well. However, we were in Greece with 39 degrees and the air conditioner is not strong enough for that).
The car can easily go off-grid for 2 days without the solar panels and the battery. Additionally, the car charges itself while driving, allowing you to stay off-grid even longer. With the battery and separate solar panels, you can go off-grid for well over a week, especially if you are a bit frugal with showering. You can charge the extra battery while driving and using the solar panels.
What makes this camper special is that it is approved for 4 people, but still weighs under 3.5 tons, meaning you can drive it with a B driving license.
