5 Best Motorhome Campsites in Jersey

March 8, 2021 in Destinations, Campsites & United Kingdom

Jersey is only 5 miles long and 9 miles wide. So, yes, it’s possible to drive around in a day. But why would you want to? As well as its selection of fantastic motorhome campsites, Jersey is a luscious little island, full of gorgeous bays and beaches that wouldn’t look out of place in the Caribbean. There are palm tree-lined promenades, arching cliffs and bays, and it’s dotted with historic monuments dating from the Neolithic eras to WWII. There are many superb eateries and local delicacies to try, like black butter and other dairy goods, and incredible seafood. For those needing downtime, there are opportunities for retail therapy, spas and yoga retreats. For an active break, the opportunities for watersports like water skiing, scuba diving, sea kayaking, surfing and windsurfing abound, and the island is crisscrossed by rambling cliff-top walks and cycle paths. It’s ideal in size for a weekend break or longer trip, so you’ll need to know the best places to stay whilst you’re there. There may only be a handful of motorhome sites in Jersey, but each is unique and offers its own experience of the island. Read on to find out our favourites!Goboony lighthouse jersey h2 camping

Before you go

Some quick tips for taking a motorhome to Jersey:

  1. A permit is required by law to bring a motorhome to Jersey. You can arrange these through Channel Islands Direct by emailing edgroup@gov.je, or they can be supplied when you book registered campsites.

  2. For those with furry friends, you can walk your dogs on the beaches all year round but restrictions apply from 1st May – 30th September, when all dogs must be kept on leads between 10:30 and 18:00.

  3. Gas is limited to 47kg and each bottle must be no heavier than 7kg (excluding the weight of the bottles).

  4. You have to stay on registered motorhome campsites in Jersey, for a maximum of 31 days, displaying the permit and returning to the site each night.

  5. The maximum speed is 40mph, with a lot of 30mph and 20mph zones. Avoid going down Green Lanes in your motorhome; they are very narrow, 15mph lanes.

Getting there

Taking your motorhome to Jersey is easy. Between April and September, Condor ferries offer daily crossings from UK ports Poole, Portsmouth and Guernsey. There are also two daily crossings from St Malo in Brittany. They’re also offering free cancellation up to 48 hours before departure this summer, with only a difference in fare to pay for new sailing dates if you need to change them.

1. Rozel Camping Park

We’re starting with the most reputable motorhome campsites in Jersey. Rozel Camping Park is a well-established, high-quality park, which has been run and managed by the Germain family for over 40 years and holds a five Pennant award from the AA with a very high score of 89%. There are four fields of spacious pitches, one of which has views over France. Many of the pitches are level and there are plenty with electric hook-up. There’s free WiFi all over the camping park, dogs are welcome, and there are two amenity blocks. The blocks have showers, baby changing rooms, disabled facilities, a disposal chemical point, a family changing area and a grey waste disposal point. There is also a laundry room with coin-operated washing machines and dryers, Other equipment like irons, ironing boards and hair dryers are free to use. BBQ bricks are available for free if you like to cook and dine alfresco. The price does reflect the great standard of your stay, but it’s worth guaranteeing you’re in your perfect pitch!

Rozel is a small fishing port in the Island’s northeast, which is famous for its good selection of restaurants. Along the same coastal strip, you’ll find Fiquet Bay, the Dolmen du Couperon, Saie Harbour, and the long breakwater of St Catherine’s Bay which is great for rod and line fishing.

2. Beauvelande Campsite

The family-run Beauvelande Campsite is set amongst the ‘Rulettes Tranquilles,’ the narrow, tree-lined lanes of northeast Jersey. It’s, proudly, the only other of Jersey’s campsites for motorhomes with the AA Five Pennant award. You’ll find everything you need here for a happy family jaunt, including a well-stocked shop, an outdoor heated swimming pool, and a licensed cafe bar with an outdoor eating area on a covered sun terrace. Nearby eateries include the popular Driftwood Cafe, which sits on the pretty pebbly beach of Achirondel in old Martello towers built by the British military in the early 19th century. There are many other historic towers built all over Jersey from local granite by various military powers, which are worth exploring!

Particularly suited to families, there’s a TV and games room, play area and large playing field, and evening entertainment in the high season. You can freeze your ice packs and charge your batteries for a small charge, arrange bike hire, and access WiFi in the restaurant. The toilet block has facilities for disabled visitors, a family shower room and baby facilities. There are also dishwashing facilities and a laundry area.  It’s one of Jersey’s bigger campsites for motorhomes, with around 100 pitches. All have 5/10A electricity, and they’re arranged on a series of flat, hedged meadows, so you’ll find something to suit your vehicle. On further fields, if you need some extra room, the further fields have pre-pitched tents to rent, including some attractive bell tents and a safari tent.

  1. Bay View Camping

Located in the rural parish of St Martin on the east coast, the Bay View Camping site sits just behind the Jersey Activity and Accommodation Centre (JAAC) Hostel. The camping field is spacious and quiet but on the simple side for motorhome sites in Jersey. A big bonus, however, is that campers have access to many of the Hostel’s facilities, including a restaurant, TV and games rooms, drinks machines, kitchen hire, a launderette and best of all, a sauna. There are toilets and showers on the camping field, which has great views over the Royal Bay of Grouville. The sunsets over the bay are particularly spectacular in the summer months. 3 pitches are available for electric hook-up at a small extra cost.

  1. The Palms Campsite & Oasis Cafe

Apart from being the only campsite in the west of the island, The Palms Campsite offers a luxury-feel camping in Jersey, enhanced by its beautiful location and surrounding views It's situated at the heart of rural St. Ouen, close to Greve de Lecq beach, which is great for swimming and rock pooling, or just 5 minutes’ drive from St Ouens Bay, which is ideally located for water sports and popular amongst surfers. From the site, you can see the other channel islands Guernsey and Sark, and the coast of France. The lanes and cliff paths around the site are great for exploring by foot or bike, and you can hop on a bus from near the site entrance to the capital town, St. Helier.

The Palms’ amenities are close to the pitches, clean, and separated male and female blocks. They have flush toilets, wash hand basins, showers with hot and cold running water 24 hours a day and a dedicated washing-up area. There’s a motorhome service area, onsite laundry service, and wifi is available throughout the site. There’s also an outdoor swimming pool and the fully-licensed Oasis Cafe Bar for drinks, snacks, breakfast, lunches and evening meals (they also operate as a takeaway and off-license too). During June and July, they have a 3-night minimum booking policy, and a 7-night minimum in August. However, if you book last minute or a couple of weeks in advance, you might be able to grab a shorter booking for this gem amongst the motorhome campsites in Jersey, if they have availability.

  1. Hideaway Motorhome Stopover

For something off the beaten track and secluded but more akin to wild camping in Jersey, pull into the Hideaway Motorhome Stopover, just a couple of minutes' drive from St Peter on the west-central part of the island. Nearby, you’ll find canoeing/kayaking, bike hire, fishing, golf, sailing, an indoor swimming pool and a watersports centre for jet skiing, waterskiing and wakeboarding.

As it isn’t strictly a campsite, there aren’t toilet and shower blocks, so this pitch-up is definitely best suited to self-contained motorhomes. There are, however, facilities for greywater and chemical disposal. There are 5 spacious, hardstanding pitches all supplied with water and electricity. It’s a pet-friendly, adult-only site.
