5 Best Motorhome Campsites in Gower AONB

October 3, 2022 in Destinations and England

The Gower Peninsula is the UK’s first designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and continues to delight visitors from all over the world. In fact, Which? readers voted the Gower the UK’s favourite AONB in 2020. A drive or walk along the 19-mile-long peninsula is sure to inspire travellers of all ages, particularly those partial to beautiful scenery and wonderful wildlife. An impressive 33% of the Gower is either a National Nature Reserve or a Site of Specific Scientific Interest (SSSI) and its glorious mix of limestone grassland, heathland, dunes, ancient oak woodlands and salt-water marshes will certainly get the twitchers twitching.

The Gower covers 188 square kilometres and contains over 1200 archaeological sites including medieval castles, Iron Age forts and 124 listed buildings. It also boasts some of Wales’ most picturesque beaches. Worm’s Head is a national icon and the waves and beautiful vistas at Rhossili Bay, Caswell and Oxwich Bay draw surfers, bodyboarders, stand-up paddleboarders, rock poolers and beach strollers all year round.

Any trip to this sublime part of the world would not be complete without the right accommodation. With this in mind, we have put together a guide to the top Gower motorhome and camping sites in some of the most interesting spots to visit. Let’s take a look at the best motorhome campsites in Gower AONB.

  1. Pitton Cross Caravan and Camping Park

Situated just one mile from Rhossili village and its sweeping golden sand beach, Pitton Cross is a great option for Gower camping sites. Hosts, the Button family have lived in the area for over 300 years so are very well placed to offer local knowledge. The bay has won many awards and regularly features in the top four best British beaches. Rhossili Bay faces directly onto the Atlantic and produces a consistent beach break so is a great option for checking out the swell. Find out more about surfing on Gower.

Pitton Cross is a quiet Gower campsite with a well-stocked shop on site including a variety of local food as well as fishing bait and tackle, bodyboards and kites. It is open all year round though there is a minimum stay at certain times of the year. Check the website for more details. Motorhome holidaymakers can choose from a variety of pitches which include space for a campervan awning. Electrical hookups, pup tents and gazebos cost a little extra.

  1. Nicholaston Farm

Want to have great access to both Three Cliffs Bay and Oxwich Bay? Look no further than Nicholaston Farm. This working farm is positioned on a gently sloping southwards-facing meadow looking over Tor Bay, Crawley Woods and the Bristol Channel. Access to the coast path is via a gate at the bottom of the campsite and it’s only a ten-minute walk to the beach. Rhossili can only be accessed on foot so you stand a good chance of having a good chunk of this two-mile stretch all to yourself.

As well as mind-blowing views, Nicholaston Farm offers visitors modern showers with underfloor heating as well as outdoor washing facilities for surfboards and another for canine companions. There is also site-wide free WiFi, an on-site takeaway and shop and free fridges and freezers. There is even a drying room for those days when the weather doesn’t cooperate. Spoiler alert - this is pretty likely to happen! All motorhome pitches are level and there is electric hookup available.

  1. Skysea Caravan and Camping Site

Skysea Caravan and Camping Site is a busy Gower campsite which is close to the beach and flanked on one side by limestone cliffs. It offers good facilities including warm showers (including disabled facilities), an outside wetsuit washing area and an onsite shop. Please note that Skysea only accepts single-family units and are clear on their website about not welcoming groups who are in the area to party.

The Wales Coast Path is right on your doorstep. Head west to Culver Hole, a man-made cave built into a deep fissure in the cliffs. The cave is thought to have served as a smugglers’ den, armoury and dovecot, and there is rumoured to contain a lost secret passage under the headland to the Salt House. The five-mile walk to Rhossili is an absolute joy on a clear day, with Worm’s Head jutting out on the horizon and the chance to see choughs, kestrels and purple sandpipers. To spot the latter, listen out for the sharp, rather coarse call. Find out more about the local winged residents on the Gower Society website.

  1. Phillistone Farm

Phillistone Farm is a Gower camping site to visit when you want to truly get away from it all. There are just five pitches here with electric hookups so make sure you book in advance. You’ll need your own shower or washing facilities as there aren’t any onsite. The farm overlooks lovely North Broughton Bay, a five-minute stroll away and if you are keen to surf, head to Llangennith just over the headland. Never surfed before but want to try it? No problem. The friendly team at Llangennith Surf School offers classes for people of all abilities, aged seven years and over.

Another must-visit in this gorgeous area is the Blue Pool or Blue Lagoon at Broughton Bay. This natural lagoon draws thousands of visitors every year but the RNLI advises strongly against swimming or bathing here. The currents are very dangerous and the water very deep (legend has it that it is bottomless) so please only gaze on this marvel and leave the swimming for the safer beaches.

  1. Eastern Slade Campsite

Eastern Slade Campsite is another great Gower motorhome site for leaving the hustle and bustle behind. Park up in one of the five pitches on this south-facing field and let the peace and quiet lull you into full holiday mode. If you can prise yourself from your hammock or camping chair, head down to pretty Slade Bay below the campsite or wander the mile or so into Oxwich village and its delightful bay. Oxwich has several good pubs and eateries including the Beach House, a Michelin Star restaurant perched high on the sand.

Eastern Slade has facilities for chemical waste disposal but no shower blocks or washing areas. Reflecting the back-to-basics nature of this welcoming Gower motorhome site, the prices are considerably less than others in the area. Perfect for travellers on a budget or people who are stretching their pounds as part of a longer Wales road trip with camping near Gower. Make sure you bring levellers as the site is on the sloping side.
