Campsites in the Netherlands
As a country that has a serious love of camping and touring, the campsites in the Netherlands are often well equipped with a variety of different options for you to park up your camper for the night. If you wanted to spend a couple days seeing the sights of Amsterdam there are some impressively central sites you can park up at, giving you access to the beautiful capital without you having to splash out on an expensive hotel or rough it in a hostel. Many campsites also have access to amazing cycling infrastructure with separate cycle paths making it possible to easily cycle between towns or into the countryside. Make sure to bring you bikes or make use of one of the many bike hire options in this country that has more bikes than people!
Things to do in the Netherlands
One of the great things about touring around the Netherlands is the people. Everyone is friendly and typically proficient in English so making new friends at campsites should be a breeze. There are a vast variety of things to do in the Netherlands and many attractions also offer bilingual information and tours in both Dutch and English. Some highlights are definitely the world class museums and quaint canals of Amsterdam, the rolling hills of Limburg with the pretty city of Maastricht and the beautiful countryside of Friesland. Make sure to check out the Dutch cuisine during your trip! Hagelslag (chocolate sprinkles) on toast for breakfast, Patatje oorlog fries (fries with sate sauce and mayonnaise) and poffertjes (mini pancakes)!
Events in the Netherlands
if you are here in late April be sure to head into a nearby town for ‘Koningsdag’ or ‘King’s day’ in English. The day is a celebration of the king’s birthday and to celebrate the streets are decorated in all things orange together with the red, white and blue of the Dutch flag. Activities include drinking, live music, second hand markets and more drinking...It is a fun cultural experience not to be missed! If you are heading to the south, you can experience Carnaval, a fun Catholic celebration of craziness in February with lots of dressing up, parades and again more drinking. There are so many other events in the Netherlands to check out from the GLOW light festival in Eindhoven to the renowned Canal pride celebrations in Amsterdam.
