Holidaying in a campervan is already a pretty sustainable way to travel. You’re not jetting across the globe, you tend to spend more time in nature and once you’re settled at a lovely campsite - many of your daily activities have a low carbon footprint. So what can you do to go the extra mile? Book an especially eco-friendly campsite of course! From composting and solar energy to sustainable initiatives, there are some incredible campsites across the UK going that extra mile. So grab your marshmallows and blanket, and help them out by visiting on your next campervan getaway.

1. South Penquite Farm - Cornwall

Set on two-hundred acres of grassy countryside, South Penquite Farm went fully organic in 2001 and haven’t looked back since! They offer camping space and yurts throughout the year for keen campers, cyclists and hikers. They have various sustainable methods of running, including harvesting rainwater, solar-heated hot water, a small wind turbine and solar panels on the barn roofs. As of 2022, they also have three EV charging stations which are supplied with renewable energy. Unlike many campsites, there are no marked pitches and travellers are allowed plenty of space to enjoy the surroundings. This does mean capacity is limited though, so get your booking in early!

2. The Quiet Site - Cumbria 

What’s not to love about the Quiet Site? Set in a picturesque location overlooking Ullswater in the Lake District, this countryside haven has been labelled as one of the most sustainable holiday parks in the UK -  in 2020 they won a Queens Award for Enterprise in Sustainable Development. Offering a zero-waste shop, solar, biomass and heat energy as well as EV charging stations, this campsite is only made better by the numerous gorgeous walking and biking trails in the nearby area. Dog’s are welcome, and if you want to treat yourself to something special, they also offer glamping pods, cabins and cottages.

3. Fen Farm Caravan Site - Essex 

Renowned for their peaceful atmosphere, Fen Farm is in the perfect location for lots of beach walks. Solar assisted heating and sun pipes power the shower block and recycling points provide ample ways for visitors to act responsibly. The tranquil location brings back visitors year after year who are looking for plenty of fresh air and outdoor activities. You can even bring the dog for lots of beach fun!

4. Comrie Croft - Perthshire, Scotland 

Comrie Croft has big ambitions in the world of sustainability and being a force for good is at the heart of what they do. Their website is packed with ideas about how to be more sustainable when visiting them and they promote exploring the area by foot or bike, recycling, moving towards zero waste and buying local food, amongst many other things! Set on the outskirts of Loch Lomond, it’s a fantastic base for exploring the wilderness of Scotland and its many walking trails and wildlife. 5. Starfield Camping - Kent 

If you’re looking for a rural location where you can appreciate the glistening night sky - then this is your place. Starfield Camping is run off a real working farm, offering an off-grid getaway for happy campers. Focused on eco-friendly camping, they provide composting toilets, no electrical hook-ups (it really is off-grid!), minimal light pollution, recycling facilities and untouched surroundings to help the local wildlife thrive. It’s important to note that because of the space they offer, they only accept small campervans, so contact them prior to booking to ensure your vehicle will be accepted.

6. Graig Wen - Snowdonia National Park, Wales 

If you’re looking for the perfect base for walks around Snowdonia, then look no further than Graig Wen. Offering glamping, cottages and camping, this beautiful campsite is a stone's throw away from some of the nicest walks in Wales. The owners are passionate about protecting the surroundings and have implemented measures and boundaries to protect the local flora and fauna. On top of that, the water is filtered from a mountain cavern and they conserve it through use of low flush and compost toilets. They’re working to harvest rainwater for use in the garden and twenty two out thirty pitches remain off grid.
