1. Portnahaven, Scotland

This village was built in the 19th century to house fishermen and crofters, and it has aged perfectly. The whitewashed cottages are organised neatly to all face the sea, making for the most picturesque strolls.

It’s a quieter village, perfect for couples looking to spend time together away from the bustle of daily life. You can also spot seals basking in the sunlight! This is the perfect August bank holiday destination for those looking to avoid crowds and enjoy a tranquil time together - or alone!

2. Belfast, Northern Ireland

Looking for a very different destination for your bank holiday? Maybe you’d like a packed schedule and endless things to do, or maybe you’re really craving a cold glass of Guinness…

It’s time to visit Belfast!

You can walk along the murals and wall paintings throughout the city that tell the story of Belfast. The city is filled with opportunities to listen to live music, so step into any pub for a good performance.

Take an organised tour through Game of Thrones filming locations or make one yourself using the many lists online. This is a great way to discover more of the city.

Foodies will love St George’s Market, which is situated in a gorgeous Victorian building and offers fresh local produce, arts and crafts, live music and more.

3. Anglesey, Wales

From basking in history to spotting the cutest squirrels, there is something for everyone on this little island. Anglesey is the perfect mix between an active getaway and a chance to get some R&R.

With six blue flag beaches, you’ll be spoiled for choice and always find a prime spot! You can also spend an afternoon walking up Holyhead Mountain for an incredible view at the top.

4. The Isle of Wight, England

There are a million reasons to take your motorhome to the Isle of Wight. It’s an island of beauty, mystery and intrigue. The Isle of Wight has hosted countless historical figures, like Lord Alfred Tennyson, Charles Dickens, and Queen Victoria, not to mention world-class musicians that have frequented its festivals over the years.

The coves, caves and bays beg to be explored, and the 70 miles of coastal track make for excellent hiking, and exciting cycle trails have been made from the island’s disused railway network.

These shores have revealed the remains of 25 different species of dinosaur, been the historic site of weapons testing and wartime raids, and its stories include starling reports of paranormal activity.

5. Eastbourne, England

This Victorian seafront offers plenty of lovely beaches for a seaside day out. Pack a swimsuit and enjoy the final rays of summer with a beach day. Eastbourne is known for delicious pubs and lovely cafes - you’ll struggle to find a better serving of fish and chips!

You can spend some of your trip exploring the gorgeous South Downs National Park, staying at one of the many campsites in the area. Be sure to visit the Seven Sisters rock formation, which is the real highlight of this area. A hiking trip may be exactly what you need for the final weekend of summer.

6. Ayr, Scotland

Welcome to the home of the renowned Scottish poet Robert Burns! Be sure to visit Burns Cottage, the 18th-century family home of Robert Burns, which is now a museum with self-guided tours. Afterwards, you can head to Burns Monument, commemorating his great life and works.

The Brig O’ Doon, also known as the Auld Brig or the Old Bridge of Doon, is a late medieval bridge that will provide a gorgeous view and an ideal picnic spot! Your afternoon could be spent at Heads of Ayr Farm Park, enjoying the animals and rides or relaxing. Or perhaps you’d like to head to Ayr beach for a peaceful stroll as the sun sets.

7. Moray Firth

Also known as the Sunshine Coast, the Moray coastline has been ranked among the top 20 most beautiful coastal areas on the planet by National Geographic!

There are several unmissable spots on this stretch of coastline. Our first recommendation is Portknockie village. This village overlooks the Firth and is a great stop for some fish and chip and dolphin watching. Just around the corner, bow-fiddle rock is a stunning rock formation jutting out into the sea.

Just beyond Portknockie, you’ll come across the Cullen Sea School, where you can enjoy an abundance of water sport activities, shore-based classes and even try your hand at boat-building. Why not try something new for the August bank holiday and head onto the water?

8. The Gower, Wales

The Gower Peninsula is a renowned location for birdwatchers, surfers, walkers and more! Filled with wild moors, dramatic limestone cliffs, golden beaches and more, Gower is a must-visit in the UK.

This stunning region was the first place in Britain to be named an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty back in 1956. You’ll find plenty to do in Gower, like exploring the 1200 archaeological sites present in this AONB, including caves, medieval castles, churches, Iron Age forts and more.

While in Gower, why not challenge yourself to a day of coasteering? You can recover from the experience by relaxing at one of Gower’s incredible beaches, such as Rhossili Bay or the secluded Pwll Du.

9. The Isles of Scilly, England

Need a proper slice of summer before you pull out your coats and jumpers?

The Isles of Scilly provide a little taste of tropical island life by the shores of Great Britain with a warm gulf stream air. You’ll find them a mere 30 miles from the coast of Cornwall, and they’ll be your sunshine and sandy summer break. You’ll also find exotic plants and wildlife that aren’t visible anywhere else in the UK.

The whole family will love a trip here, and you can also make it part of a road trip through Wales. We recommend combining a visit to this beach with walking (part of) the 11-mile stretch from Broad Haven to South Shrinkle Haven on the Wales Coast Path.
