Shetland is beautiful and we could have easily spent another week there and still wanted to come back for more. It's difficult to choose a favourite place, but the beach at St Ninian's Isle was beautiful (plus good parking), and seeing puffins at Sumburgh Head and otters in the lochs was very special. The Croft House Museum was fascinated, and brought to life by the excellent guide. Lerwick was charming with lots of interesting independent shops, plus a good Tesco for your basics. We did a mixture of eating in and eating out, and the places we liked were The Peerie Cafe and Fjara Cafe Bar in Lerwick, Da Otter's Neuk on Unst, The Cornerstone in Scalloway, and the Braewick Cafe in Northmavine. There are many fine dining options on Shetland but we didn't experience these (the thought of dressing up clashed with our relaxed holiday mood!). Shona was the perfect host - friendly and welcoming. She met us off the ferry with Helga and explained how everything worked. The snacks, coffee and tea that Shona provided were gratefully received. I had always wanted to hire a motorhome and am delighted that Helga was my first experience. Easy to drive, a great size, warm and cosy,. The bed was so comfortable. Shona was helpful when we called because we didn’t fully understand how to get the electric going. After three fabulous days touring the Shetland Islands from north to south, we delivered Helga back safe and sound to Shona at the ferry terminal. May 2026
