1. Dartmoor National Park, England
There is something endless about Dartmoor National Park; it genuinely feels like it might go on forever. From granite tors to ancient woodland, this large national park is the rugged kind of beautiful. In between this untamed beauty, you’ll find cosy villages with locals happy to give you some tips for the area.
If your favourite list of things to do in May involves being outdoors and having plenty of quiet time, then this is the place for you.
Things to do in Dartmoor National Park:
-Dartmoor is filled with unique prehistoric sites. There are three we’d recommend visiting, all of which have been awarded English Heritage status: Merrivale Prehistoric Settlement, Grimspound, and the Upper Plym Valley. These places will provide you with a special insight into what was happening on these moors over 4,000 years ago.
-Spring is a great time for wildlife, and nowhere is this clearer than at Buckfast Butterfly Farm and Dartmoor Otter Sanctuary. You’ll get to watch little otters scampering about and see more butterflies than you ever imagined possible.
-You can’t leave Dartmoor without fitting in a hike! There’s something for everyone here. The Princetown route is known to be easy and accessible, it’s just under two miles and takes an hour. The Buckfastleigh route is more difficult over three and a half miles, and will take almost four hours.
2. Tenby, Wales
When you’re considering where to go on holiday in May, consider the delightful Welsh town of Tenby. This harbour town is known for its 13th-century town walls and its stretches of sandy shoreline. It is also beloved for its beaches, including Castle Beach, which was awarded ‘Britain’s Best Beach’ in 2019 — you can bet locals are still mentioning that!
Tenby's idyllic seaside charm is the perfect way to relax and unwind. You can spend your days soaking in the May sunshine or hiding in one of the great museums or galleries if the weather takes a turn.

-Tenby is known for having the best fish and chips in the Pembrokeshire region, so test this theory for yourself. This is best done at Tenby’s Fish & Chips, which provides the simple, salty classic. Or the Stonecrab is a finer establishment, known for its seafood and rustic setting by the harbour. You can have an amazing Sunday roast at the Brewery Inn with tender meats and delicious veggies.
-Wales is known for its castles, and Tenby is no different. The ruins of Tenby Castle are situated on Castle Hill, surrounded by the sea. You can walk through this castle dating back to 1153 and enjoy the impressive view.
-If you’re looking to head indoors for a few hours, we’ve got two great options for you. At the Tudor Merchant’s House, you’ll be taken back to domestic life in 1500, complete with a merchant’s shop and working kitchen. At the Tenby Museum and Art Gallery, you can explore the constantly changing exhibits and learn more about this incredible region.
3. Stratford-upon-Avon, England
This is one of the best weekend breaks from London, and the ideal short getaway with kids. Every Brit should visit Stratford-upon-Avon at least once, if only to indulge in all the Shakespearean sights. Don’t mistake it for some tawdry tourist attraction, as this is actually a delightful place to visit. Aside from all the dedications to the Bard, who might very well be the most famous writer in the English language, it’s a charming town that looks like it was plucked straight from the pages of a fairytale. Things to do in Stratford-upon-Avon:
-Let’s get the obvious choices out of the way, also known as everything related to William Shakespeare. You can visit his birthplace, the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and Anne Hathaway’s Cottage. There are often performances of his work, which occur outside in the warmer months, and are a great way to get little ones interested in the theatre.
-Head to the Stratford Butterfly Farm, a tropical greenhouse filled with butterflies, for a view like no other. It’s a whirlwind of colours and feels like magic bottled up in tiny frail wings.
-Spend some time exploring the many great parks of Stratford, which many consider to be a highlight of the city. You can stroll through the Shakespearean Gardens, which features plants mentioned in Shakespeare's works, or you can walk through the Upper Queen’s Park, which will be in full bloom by this time of year.
4. Galloway Forest Park, Scotland
From rolling hills to tranquil glens, Galloway Forest Park is an eden right here in Scotland. It is often referred to as the ‘Highlands of the Lowlands’, and you’ll quickly discover how Galloway Forest Park earned this prestigious title. We love recommending this area as one of the best weekend breaks from Edinburgh, as it's only two hours away, but it’s also perfect for a longer trip.
Things to do in Galloway Forest Park:
-Did you know that this is the only Dark Sky Park in Scotland? One of the best things to do in the UK in May could be the simple yet underrated act of stargazing. Galloway Forest Park is also one of the best places to see the Northern Lights in Scotland.
-This is one of the greatest places for cycling in all of Scotland, and that’s setting the bar pretty high. Expert riders will adore the Clatteringshaws Loch loop, which stretches over 49 miles from Newton Stewart to Galloway Forest Park. -We like to pretend it’s for the kids, but in all honesty, we love visiting The Whithorn Story. This museum and visitor centre brings history to life, teaching you all about this region's rich past. You’ll learn about the arrival of the Pilgrims, the Reformation, and Scotland’s first saint, St. Ninian. There’s also a simulated archaeological dig and remains of real Iron Age settlements.
-Before leaving this pristine area, be sure to take in the spectacular views of Merrick, the highest peak in the Galloway Forest.
5. Cardigan, Wales
Cardigan has a little bit of something for everyone, including picturesque landscapes, ancient history, excellent commerce, and a dazzling blue sea. It’s difficult to sum up Cardigan, as it is part old-fashioned Welsh market town, part hippy enclave, and more. It attracts both those looking for an active holiday as well as those looking to cafe hop and do some damage to their bank account.
You’ll also find many great beaches in Cardigan Bay, perfect for swimming, paddle-boarding or just enjoying the sunshine.
Things to do in Cardigan:
-Another Welsh town, another castle to visit! This time you’re heading to the majestic Cardigan Castle. This Norman fortress was reborn through a £12 million restoration. You can have 900 years of history narrated by Welsh Emmy-winning actor Matthew Rhys, a fun way to bring history to life.
-Cardigan is a shopper’s paradise. It is filled with fantastic vintage and antique shops, as well as local crafts and produce. A highlight is the Cardigan Antiques Centre which sells all sorts of jewellery, vintage toys, books and curiosities.
-A great way to teach the little ones how to safely and ethically interact with wildlife is through the Welsh Wildlife Centre. The Teifi Marshes are home to some of the most incredible flora and fauna in the UK, as well as kingfishers, otters and wading birds.
6. Anglesey, Wales
You can achieve that seaside island experience right here in the UK, and it’s waiting for you in Anglesey. Tucked away in the north of Wales, this is the perfect paradise for your May holiday. If you’ve only got a weekend to spare, you can visit the highlights like Cemaes Bay and Holyhead. But if you have a week, like the half-term holiday, you can complete the circular Anglesey road trip itinerary.
Things to do in Anglesey:
-Make sure to visit one of the most famous landmarks of Anglesey: the South Stack Lighthouse. Perched on the summit of a small island, this 400-step-high lighthouse was built in 1809 to warn sailors of the rocky waters below. It’s a climb to reach the top, but the view will definitely be worth it.
-Anglesey is home to some of the best beaches in the UK, and May might just signal the start of swimsuit weather. There are six Blue Flag Beaches to choose from: Benllech, Llanddwyn, Church Bay, Trearddur Bay, Llanddona, and Porth Dafarch. We also recommend visiting Cwyfans Church, which is only accessible during low tide.

7. Lincolnshire Wolds, England
If you’re looking for where to on holiday in May without being plagued by crowds, then immediately put the Lincolnshire Wolds into your GPS. Somehow people haven’t caught on to how incredible this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is, and trust us, it truly is outstanding.
It’s a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Manchester and a four-hour drive from London. Historic market towns, sleepy villages, and the bustling city of Lincoln surround the Lincolnshire Wolds AONB. There are many farmers' markets and shops selling local produce, so it’s a foodie’s dream destination.
Things to do in the Lincolnshire Wolds:
-The Lincolnshire Wolds are a walker’s paradise. There are many routes to choose from. The Spa Trail is ideal for wheelchair users, families with pushchairs, and young children. Silver Lincs Way is a 25-mile circular trail. For a challenge, try the 69-mile Lindsey Trail, which takes you from Market Rasen to Horncastle.
-Right in the heart of Lincolnshire, you’ll find Horncastle. A historic town dating back to the Roman period, Horncastle is now beloved for its antique shops and artisan stores. It also features many family-friendly pubs and activities for all ages.
-Why not spend an afternoon in the UK’s City of Culture, Hull? The Museums Quarter offers free admission to many great museums. Hull is also beloved for its vintage boutiques and quirky independent stores, the perfect place to find fashionable relics to take home. 8. Mourne Mountains, Northern Ireland
Our list wouldn’t be complete without a stop over the water to the Emerald Isle. Northern Ireland is filled with stunning destinations to choose from, but for the best chance to enjoy spring in all its glory, we recommend heading to the Mourne Mountains.
This granite mountain range includes the highest mountains in Northern Ireland, from which you’ll have an unbeatable view. But you don’t need to get to the top to enjoy it, as these mountains are an incredible view in themselves. It won’t surprise you to learn that they are an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a UNESCO Global Geopark.
Things to do in the Mourne Mountains:
-Cyclists will find exactly what they’ve been dreaming of in the Mourne Loop. This 45-mile route offers a mix of flat terrain, steady climbs and long descents. The perfect day out in the Mourne Mountains. This is ideal for May, as earlier in the year, it can be a bit too chilly near the top.
-Do you Prefer having your feet firmly planted on the ground? Spend a day hiking through the Silent Valley, a must-see for the region. You can walk the outline of the sparkling reservoir, explore the history of the workers who built it, or simply drink in the park’s namesake silence.
-It won’t surprise you to learn that parts of this region were used as filming locations for Game of Thrones, and served as an inspiration for CS Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia. There are many tours taking you through specific locations, or you can wander around them yourself. Sites like the striking Mourne Wall will make you feel like you’ve stepped into a fantasy world yourself.
9. Isles of Scilly, England
The Isles of Scilly are one of those places in the UK that will make you feel like you’re abroad. You could easily mistake this stunning destination for the Caribbean, all the while being just miles off the coast of Cornwall. May brings about the kind of weather where you can truly enjoy the white-sand beaches and turquoise waters of the Isles of Scilly.
But don’t worry if the May weather isn’t as delightful as you hoped. The Isles of Scilly have better weather all year round, and you can even escape a British winter here.

-You’ve survived a frosty winter and a wet spring, so reward yourself by simply relaxing at one of the best beaches on the Isles of Scilly. In particular, we love Appletree Bay. It’s set on the shores of Tresco Abbey and has its own sub-tropical gardens, a true gem of the region.
10. St Andrews, Scotland

It’s a charming seaside town, a true gem in the Kingdom of Fife. Aside from its ancient university, St Andrews is home to three lovely beaches, a famous golf course, cosy pubs and botanic gardens. It’s a simple place, which can be exactly what you’re looking for in a May getaway.
Things to do in St Andrews:
-Any fans of The Crown here with us? Well, as you know Prince William met Kate Middleton while studying at St Andrews University, so it was featured heavily in the final season of the show. You can spot some familiar settings as you stroll about. Or if you have slightly different cinematic tastes, you can go to the beach where Chariots of Fire was filmed, also known as West Sands.
-All this walking will surely build up an appetite, so head to Cromar’s for what’s supposedly the best fish and chips in town. You can even get them to go, and enjoy them on the nearby Castle Sands beach. Or if you haven’t had your fill of royalty, grab a delicious fry-up at Northpoint, which claims to be where Will met Kate (although a lot of places claim this).
-Take a guided walk of the Old Course, which is considered to be the most famous golf course in the world. You’ll get to walk in the footsteps of icons of the game and experience a player's eye view of the fabled links. Golf has been played in St Andrews for more than 600 years, although many believe the game's origins here date back to the 12th Century.
