This is our much-loved Swift Escape 686, 6 berth, Motorhome. We chose it with our family of 5 in mind (for use off-grid), wanting space for my wife (Chrissy) and I in the rear lounge area during the evening whilst the 3 little ones are ‘sleeping towards the front’, and enough space during rainy days indoors that we would not feel ‘on-top’ of each other (as much as that is possible in a van) thanks to the dining seating at the front and separate lounge at the back. There is even a spare seat if Granny wants to come away. We hope you enjoy our van as much as we do.

The rear lounge turns into a large double bed, good for mum and dad., which can be left ‘made’ if there are just 2 traveling. Then there is the double fold down over-cab bed with safety net, perfect for our 5 & 4 year-old, the third double bed comes from the diner-style table seating and is a little shorter than a standard double at 1.84m x 1.22m, at 6’1” I am able to sleep on this diagonal. There is plenty of storage throughout the vehicle including a wardrobe with hangers.

The heating and hot water can be programmed and the kitchen facilities are as close to those you will find at home when cooking in a motorhome, it even has a microwave (though this will only work if you have electrical hook-up, like at a campsite). We consciously decided not to have a TV in the van so we can focus on spending time together as a family, reading books and playing board games.

Communication and pick-up/drop-off of the van were clear, on time and straight forward. Tom is a very nice chap 😁 The van is a 6 berth and has seat belts for 6 to travel safely. It is easy to drive, with 6 gears, and both motorway driving and country lanes were straight forward. There is a rear-view camera, which was useful both when driving and reversing. On the motorway, it made it much easier to see where other vehicles were in relation to the van and reduced the blind spots significantly. We were 4 adults away for a long weekend. My husband, our son, his girlfriend and me. There is a drop-down bed over the cab, plus a decent-size double bed converted from the rear seating area. This was easy to do and we left it as a bed for the whole weekend, as were out of the van for most of each day. We took our own mattress toppers, which kept the cushions together and provided a more comfortable sleeping experience for our creaky joints! The centre of the van has a kitchen and a seating/dining area. There are 3 gas rings and an oven/grill, plus a small fridge and a microwave. The van has basic equipment - plates, bowls, glasses, cups in melamine, plus a whistling kettle (loved this), measuring jug and camping cooking pans. We took and used our own large deep wok-style frying pan, a large saucepan and crockery. There is a decent sharp knife, cutlery for 6 and a good "waiter's friend" type cork screw. There is a big jerrican for topping up the fresh water. This is extremely heavy when full and we could not carry it. Luckily, there was a small motorised truck running around the site and the driver took the water back to the van for us. We have suggested to Tom that he invests in a roller water carrier and/or a hosepipe so that the freshwater can be connected directly to the site tap if possible. There is a pump for transferring the water from the jerrican into the van tank. There is an onboard loo, sink and shower. We didn't use the shower, as there were facilities on site. The cassette for the toilet waste is easy to remove, wheel to the disposal point and reinsert. The cassette is smaller than our previous van experience and we recommend emptying every day. The heating works well. The van is cosy for 4 adults, but adequate. A family with 2 or 3 kids would find it perfect. The seating area has 4 seat belts, but we only needed 2. This worked fine as there was room to stretch out legs. It would be a squeeze with 4 adults, but fine for 4 kids. Overall, we had a good experience hiring Tom's van and would be happy to hire from him again. Thank you, Tom 👏 April 2022
